THE NFL WEEK 3 REPORT – WE’RE CHECKIN’ IN ON THE QUARTET OF 2-AND-OH TEAMS THAT ARE GRABBIN’ UP POINTS THIS AUTUMN WEEKEND …
COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: WELCOME BACK, SEC, BUT THERE’S OTHER JUICY ITEMS ON THIS MENU TOO
No doubt there are a gazillion different ways to handicap the National Football League on a week-to-week basis but bear with us here today as our major interest this weekend is tracking those teams with 2-and-oh SU (straight-up) records thus far who find themselves in the underdog role in Week 3.
The Los Angeles Rams, the Chicago Bears, the Las Vegas Raiders and the Green Bay Packers – yes, all high-profile and “big-name” teams in this league where they play for pay – all are grabbin’ up some points on Sunday afternoon / Sunday night and we’ll duly note the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are Monday Night Football underdogs in their game at Baltimore.
True, Sunday’s group of unbeaten teams-plus-points in Week 3 are a combined 7-1 ATS (against the spread) so far through the first two weeks of NFL regular-season play – only the Bears have failed to cover a game among this shiny quartet as last week the Chitowners won but didn’t cover the 4.5-point price against the visiting New York Giants (a winner for the Jim Hurley Network!) – and so maybe it’s a mere knee-jerk reaction to “send it in” on the Rams / Bears / Raiders / Packers this final Sunday in the month of September.
But please do keep the following in mind: The Rams are trekking back across the country – COVID-19 protocols, you know – to play at 2.5-point favorite Buffalo just one week after dismantling 2-point home fav Philadelphia 37-19;
The Bears are getting three points in Atlanta here in Week 3 play but can in-the-know folks really trust a Chicago team that needed a 21-point fourth quarter to topple Detroit in Week 1 and then went scoreless after halftime last weekend against the aforementioned Jints?;
The Raiders have strung together back-to-back 34-point games in wins / covers at Carolina and then home to New Orleans this past Monday Night but now Jon Gruden’s gang is travelling to play at 5-point favorite New England off the short work week. Hmm;
Finally, there’s the Packers who have ravaged divisional foes Minnesota and Detroit by a composite score of 85-to-55 in the season’s first two weeks but gobbling up just three points in New Orleans this Sunday night might not seem so appealing. After all, the Saints are coming off that loss in Las Vegas with mucho national media criticism building up against QB Drew Brees and friends.

In other NFL Week 3 News /Notes … The Miami Dolphins put an emphatic halt to their season-starting two-game SU losing streak with Thursday Night’s wire-to-wire 31-13 win. Hats off to Fish QB Ryan Fitzpatrick – he completed a whopping 18-of-20 passes for 160 yards and two TDs with 0 INTs. Hey, we joked in our prior column here about the Jacksonville Jaguars looking to go 3-0 spreadwise to start this ’20 season but missing WR DJ Chark (chest / back) was a killer and the Jags’ O-line was a major mess …
Is it really too early so start discussing what NFL coaches may be on the proverbial “hot seat”? While the buzzards are out in formation overhead New York Jets’ second-year boss Adam Gase there is little doubt that under-siege Atlanta Falcons’ boss Dan Quinn needs a win badly here in that already-mentioned matchup against Da Bears. If the Falcons don’t win at least three of their next six games, then Quinn’s a likely goner by Halloween …
Finally, Spread Stat of the Week: The Carolina Panthers (now minus superstar RB Christian McCaffrey) are an ugly 1-8-1 against the vig in their last 10 games dating back to last year.
THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
Earlier this week here on these column pages we hyped the return of the great Southeastern Conference – and we’re super-geeked that the Pac-12 just announced it is gonna return to the gridiron in November – but don’t sleep on the fact there’s some really fun non-SEC matchups on this Saturday menu. Here’s two of ‘em:
#22 Army (2-0) at #14 Cincinnati (1-0) – 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN
Don’t look now but the West Pointers have a shot to cover their first three games of the season for the first time since 2016 – if an Army offense that’s rushed for a grand total of 779 yards in wins / covers against Middle Tennessee State and UL-Monroe can crank it up here then that 13.5-point price tag will be a major bargain. P.S., Cincy has failed to cover four of its last five games when laying a twin-figure price.
Florida State (0-1) at #12 Miami (2-0)—7:30 p.m. ET, ABC
Last week the Jim Hurley Network cashed easily with U of M’s wire-to-wire 47-34 triumph at 2.5-point home dog Louisville. Now, what’s gonna happen with the ‘Canes laying a double-digit price against archrival Florida State? And be aware the Seminoles are a composite 11-23-2 against the vig since the start of the 2017 campaign. Hey, Miami is again asking transfer QB D’Eriq King (325 passing yards and three scoring strikes against the ‘Ville last Saturday night) to power up this offensive attack and remember ‘Noles’ first-year coach Mike Norvell – who tested positive for coronavirus earlier this week – won’t be in the building.
